Personal Statement/Teaching Philosophy of S. A. A. Shah
Since I was no age, books and learning were part of my life. As I made my way through school some of the greatest influences on my thoughts and ideas were my teachers. I began to realize that I wanted to be a teacher. I feel that teaching is a vocation and it is not a post you should consider unless you really do have an empathy with young people and willingness to adapt as and when circumstances dictate. Another reason for choosing teaching as a career is that no two days will be the same as you build on the ideas presented to you by the Learners and the challenge is to channel those ideas into learning situations.
As a teacher, I have unique opportunity to make a difference to the lives of English Language Learners. I can second spark young enquiring minds to foster a sense of wonder in the world; and instill a sense of self-respect and respect for others.
My first teaching experience was in 2001 with a class of adult learners (age 19+). This was an English Spoken and written course, a richly rewarding experience. There were students who (through my encouragement) were genuinely interested in learning rather than preparation for exam. Our classes were very engaging exercises in active learning and critical thinking.
Since then I have taught and researched in the United Kingdom, Northern Ireland, Pakistan, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Sultanate of Oman. I am currently working in one of the most successful University Colleges of Oman and find the experience deeply rewarding and devote considerable time to each student. I excel in developing student interest, enquiry based learning, classroom management, exam results and promoting the idea of that learning for development not only my students knowledge but also their character and critical faculties. This OCMT enjoys remarkable diversity in the curriculum. Students, after all, come in all shapes and sizes; and most importantly, from all ethnic backgrounds.
I make extensive use of formative assessment. My teaching has been descried as inspirational. I use cutting edge ICT techniques in my teaching to promote engaging learning and bring subject to life. I have a very deep understanding and passion for my subject. I have lived in a variety of countries with my wife, who is an interior designer of significant experience. I am very familiar with the expatriate lifestyle and can integrate well into the surrounding culture and norms.
I clinched my post graduate studies in TESOL, English Linguistics, and International Relations from the top notch universities of the United Kingdom and Pakistan.
International teaching experience makes me well-suited to teach within the structures of the International Baccalaureate.
Sincerely,
Ali
